Depression is far more common than people realise. All people get sad sometimes, if the cause is isolated and less meaningful, they recover to feel better. However, sometimes, perhaps if the cause of the sadness is meaningful it deepens into depression. This is a far more serious condition that can have a devastating effect on life and well being if not treated. Depression can sometimes creep up gradually and a person may not realise they are depressed, it can sometimes take a family member or close friend to mention the word depression before the person realises they have a potentially serious condition.
There is a perception that people with depression are “weak” in some way. This is absolutely untrue as the most competent, strong, achieved people can be struck down with depression. People with depression are sometimes “helped” by family and friends by being told to pull themselves together, this is the wrong approach and can worsen their condition.
