What is the difference between anxiety and panic attacks ?

This is an interesting read. It proposes the question ‘what is the difference between anxiety and panic attacks ?’ Well, to summarize it states that panic attacks happen when your body’s nervous system feels like it is under attack or in danger. On the other hand anxiety can feel that it is there all the time; you can feel it in the background, in the subconscious of your mind.

BBC – newsbeat – anxiety

So where does anxiety come from?. Well, I am going to make an unusual statement as anxiety is predominantly a human emotion, as we are the only animal that can bring the past and the future into the present and make it feel as if it was real and now, when in fact the event is history and gone or it has not happened yet ! . For example a negative event in the past associated with a negative belief is age progressed in our mind into the future to a similar event which has its own negative belief even though it has not happened yet !.

How to spot anxiety

    • You feel awkward, anxious, uneasy or nervous.
    • Feel doubtful of your self-worth – and self-confidence.
    • Feel faint, light-headed, disconnected from the surrounding area.
    • Easily irritated, breathing becomes heavy, muscles become sore.
    • Twitching, trembling, shaky feelings, palms start to sweat.
    • Continuous crying, feeling of hopelessness.
    • Difficulty concentrating or remembering things.
    • Focusing on upsetting events that have happened in your life.
    • Repeated conversations of people’s voices in your head.
    • Feeling of wanting to escape from your surrounding area or situation.

Hypnotherapy in Berkshire for weight loss

Many people, at some point life, will come to the realization that they have put on too many pounds and decide to go on a diet.  The problem however is that  many people can find themselves losing weight only in a short period of time putting it back on again

The underlying cause

Significant emotional life events can cause unconscious negative beliefs, which in turn cause anxiety and stress which in turn reverts us to old behaviours of  negative eating habits and a  negative relationships with food.  The problem therefore is no matter how strict we are when we go on a diet, and how determined we may be to lose weight quickly and stick to our diets, unless we identify the underlying negative beliefs causing our negative behaviour with food, we won’t be able to make long-term positive changes.

How can Cognitive Hypnotherapy help?

There is plenty of help I can offer as an experienced Cognitive Hypnotherapist in Berkshire for weight loss to enable you to get back in control of you and your eating. By recognising that you might have a problem and looking for help you have already taken the first step towards conquering your disordered relationship with food.
Traditional medical treatment for eating disorders is typically aimed at changing the person’s unhealthy eating behaviour with regards to food. My approach as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist in Berkshire for weight loss is different as I want to understand the emotional beliefs that are leading the person to do this behaviour.
Cognitive Hypnotherapy is excellent for dealing with these issues as they work at a deeper level of consciousness, helping the individual to develop a greater understanding of their own mind and why their brain causes them to behave in this destructive way. Rather than attempting too quickly to change behaviour, which the individual believes are necessary. I  enable clients to enhance and grow feelings of self worth/value which enable the client to make changes to their patterns of eating and associated behaviour at a rate with which they feel comfortable with.

How many questions will I need ?

This will probably be not as many as you might think. Cognitive Hypnotherapy can often be very effective and make permanent changes, in a very short amount of time compared to other approaches. To successfully treat the underlying causes and the habit, it is my experience that this can be achieved on average 3 to 4 sessions.

What’s your most important word ? – by a Berkshire hypnotherapist

If you have clicked on this blog you’ve had a chance to think about that for a few seconds. What word came to mind?, perhaps it was love, perhaps trust, was it freedom ?, maybe loyalty. All these are worthy contenders for the most important word, let me suggest another one, as it comes up regularly during my Hypnotherapy in Berkshire sessions. But before we get to it I have attached a link at the end here that shows a vintage clip of an interview with the Honorary Oscar Winner, and late Peter O’Toole. To finally offer the word up for consideration, in the interview Peter says that before becoming an actor he had vague thoughts on being a journalist, but by the time he had reached his early 30’s he had not made up his mind. He said he had kept in touch with an old Headmaster, who at school used to give him a word to think about, a word like LOYALTY for example and then think about it for a WEEK. When he was about 30 and still undecided what work to do , he met him again, this time his headmaster said think about the word CHOICE …and take 3 MONTHS !!. A Life changing statement.
So why is the word CHOICE ? so important, well, if the unconscious but dominant emotion of fear is driving the choice, because its unconscious and dominant we have no conscious CONTROL of ourselves, and of our decision. Our choice and decision is based on fear and we cannot control it !.
In the case of Peter I believe the wise old headmaster knew that Peter wanted to be an actor. However, unconsciously but dominantly there was a fear driving the choice to not make a decision, life was drifting into him becoming a journalist rather than an actor, its less risky and scary becoming a journalist rather than an actor, don’t you think ?, it was only until he confronted his fears over the 3 months that he made a much better CHOICE for him..and all of us too.
Using Cognitive Hypnotherapy in Berkshire I can help you re-educate your unconscious mind with new perspectives so that fear is not the driving the decisions and CHOICES you make.

Feeling depressed ?, your options include Hypnotherapy

Feeling depressed ?, your options include Hypnotherapy, a view from a hypnotherapist in Berkshire.
Having been successful in using Cognitive Hypnotherapy in Berkshire to help a number of depressed client over the years, I found a number of aspects in this article in the Daily Telegraph to be very common to all.
Why Can’t I get off the happy pills?
However there is one particular point that caught my attention that I would like to repeat here. The lady in question states that when she first visited her GP she was given 2 options – counselling with its long waiting list ( and as of the date of this print it still is ) or antidepressants. In this case the patient was advised to take the antidepressants. But, and it’s a big but, patients do have more options than this. For example, a lady contacted me after visiting her GP and had been informed that she had the same 2 options, CBT with 6 week waiting list ( and that’s a long time feeling depressed ), or antidepressants . She told the doctor that she felt that she did not want to wait that long for therapy and that she did not want to take tablets as she was worried about the side-effects ( see article above ). She also told me that her GP was an informed person and he had said that she had the option to seek private therapy and that Hypnotherapy could help, hence she contacted me. We met for our 1st session within 1 week of her contacting me and had 4 sessions in total within a 4 week period, the 4th session entailed her informing me how happy she was that the 3 previous sessions had been so successful and that did not need any further sessions as she no longer felt depressed. See testimonial JJ, Maidenhead here.

Are your ‘what if’s’ causing you anxiety ?.

As a Hypnotherapist in Berkshire, anxiety is amongst the most common symptom consulted for at my Hypnotherapy in Berkshire for anxiety – Windsor clinic.

We then in our minds age regress from the future imagined bad scenarios, to the here and now and turn them into the ‘what if’s’ in life. Even though these are only imagined future scenarios, the body still experiences a stress fight or flight response, the physical anxiety. Prolonged anxiety causes the body to be flooded with adrenaline and hormones which accumulate and cause serious health issues.

So if you feel that things are getting on top of you and causing you anxiety Cognitive Hypnotherapy in Berkshire is very effective at helping you overcome these problems by re-educating the unconscious mind in a variety of different ways.

Hypnotherapy in Berkshire for Confidence

How confident do you think you are?
As a Hypnotherapist in Berkshire I ask you to take a moment to think about that question, think about how do you see yourself. How much of your self-confidence is dependent on situation ?. How much confidence do you feel is dependent on your work?. Your title?. How much of your confidence is dependent on your friends? Your partner if you have one? Your family? Your finances?. Now, as a hypnotherapist in Berkshire, I ask you to ask yourself another question – do you feel an inner sense of confidence regardless of the situations you are in?
What is an inner sense of Self-Confidence ?
Self-confidence is often linked with being in a certain situation ( i.e. job role ), a title ( a label ), a knowledge or skill. However, whilst you may think you have achieved these things you may not feel you have an inner sense of self-confidence. A persons situation / environment is not a necessary a prerequisite for an inner sense self confidence. Someone can sometimes find themselves completely lost in the world and still feel that with their an inner sense of self confidence that they will find their way forward. Someone who has an inner sense of self confidence has a strong sense certainty in themselves, not their situation.
Symptoms of lack of sense of Self-Confidence
Here are a list of some symptoms associated with a low sense of self confidence:
1. A need to control their environment to make sure things will turn out good
2. Always doing things to please others
3. Unhappy with their own company and a need to always be with others to be happy
4. Lack of assertiveness
5. Low belief in their capabilities
6. Preoccupation with looking at past failures
7. A belief that things that have not happened yet will turn out bad
8. Will take the blame for things not their fault
9. Fear of new things
10. Critical of themselves
11. Fear of change
The cause of low sense of self confidence can very often be linked back to our early life when our identity, beliefs, and value in ourselves was formed. How we truly see ourselves on an unconscious but dominant level which is influenced early in life both positively and negatively via our family, parents, teachers, etc. If the influence is negative it creates a low sense of self confidence and this as cause an effect influences negatively our capabilities in oneself, our motivation and behaviour, how positively we deal with challenges and goals, and how we interact with the world around us.
Using Cognitive Hypnotherapy in Berkshire integrating NLP techniques we can replace those unconscious old negative beliefs / feelings with new perspectives so you can lose those symptoms of lack of self confidence, change your patterns of behaviour and feel more confident about your goals and challenges.

Hypnotherapist in Berkshire for fear of flying – living with fear of flying, the cause and successful treatment.

This story of a women with a fear of flying, stranded for a month at a cost of £5k, demonstrates just how this phobia can have a dramatic impact on a person’s life.  I have recently successfully treated a number of people with this issue so I thought I put down a few words on living with a fear of flying, the cause and the treatment:

Living with a fear of flying

You’re not alone. An estimated 20-40% of the population experience anxiety whilst flying, making fear of flying one of the most common phobias.

Even though this anxiety can seem irrational to us, our subconscious mind may create anxiety and panic attacks as it thinks it is protecting us. Protecting us is the primary function of our subconscious mind, and as flying is essentially an unnatural thing for people to do, this reaction is not surprising. However in reality, flying has been proven to be one of the safest ways to travel. Statistically it is enormously safer than driving a car or even crossing the road.

Having a fear of flying can often interfere with holidays or business travel and lead to an individual avoiding a career involving travel or a family holiday abroad. There are many aspects of flying that can create anxiety and panic, such as fearing the plane will crash, turbulence, claustrophobia, and importantly the feeling of being out of control. The anxiety and fear can start to build up weeks before a flight, the anxiety before flying can lead to a state of terror which can in the extreme prevent an individual from getting on the plane or even leaving it once they have boarded.

Most people who do not suffer from a fear of flying often feel that quoting safety statistics and probabilities should put the sufferers mind at ease. However this usually does little to ease the discomfort of the sufferer, as they are unable to think rationally about this information as it will be processed by the conscious mind who WANTS to fly but this will be overridden by the powerful emotional but sometimes irrational subconscious mind who will STOP them flying, as it is trying to protection them. Sufferers with this conflict will respond with a statement like “yes I know ALL THAT  BUT I feel I can’t stop THE FEELING of being anxious”, the language shows the conscious logical mind v the subconscious emotional mind, the conflict, and the result being the powerful subconscious wins every time !. It is only after I have successfully helped a sufferer lose their subconscious fear that they are receptive to information on safety statistics, and I do this in the last session with them where I can apply the the knowledge and experience I gained in a previous lengthy career in aviation.

The Fear of flying can affect anyone, regardless of age, status, gender and intelligence, and is not a sign of weakness. The good news is that with Cognitive Hypnotherapy in Berkshire there are techniques that can access the subconscious mind to enable a sufferer to overcome their fear of flying and in some cases even make flying a pleasurable activity!

Fear of flying causes

Fear of flying is a learned fear, we are not born with it. It may surprise sufferers to hear that often the emotional original event leading to a fear of flying may not have had anything to do with flying on aircraft !, and it could be an event in childhood that they may or may NOT be consciously aware of, often this traumatic event in childhood is caused by a trauma involving LOSS OF CONTROL resulting in the unconscious need to always be in control ( and as we all know that on an aircraft we surrender control to the pilots and the aircraft integrity ), it’s easy to see from this how this leads to anxiety and panic. Sometimes people can fly happily for many years of their life, then due to experiencing a flight involving bad turbulence or the plane having to make an emergency landing where they felt out of control), it triggers the unconscious need to be in control and a phobia develops. Fear of flying may also be caused by other fears and phobias such as claustrophobia, fear of heights or agoraphobia. Misunderstandings of the principles of aviation can fuel a fear of flying too.

Treatment for fear of flying

As said previously, the good news is that there are techniques that can access the subconscious mind to enable a sufferer to overcome their fear of flying and in some cases even make flying a pleasurable activity!

Further to an initial free chat over the phone, the first initial consultation/session involves specialist gentle questioning which reveals context, and which primarily reveals the original cause.

Utilizing information from the first session I can prepare a personalized treatment plan. The following sessions involve techniques which involve communicating with the subconscious mind and re-evaluating and re-consolidating new positive thinking patterns to remove the fear in our subconscious mind. As as a result this gives us back CONFIDENCE & CONTROL of OURSELVES and CONTROL of our fear of flying.

During the initial free chat over the phone people often ask how many sessions will it take to stop the fear ?.  Well, as an experienced Cognitive Hypnotherapist, coupled with previously  working for a world leading airline gaining many decades of aviation experience, I have been successful in helping many sufferers lose their fear of flying in only a very few sessions ( typically 2 or 3  ). If you are a sufferer of fear of flying please Contact me for a Hypnotherapist in Berkshire and I can be more specific regarding this question and any other you want to ask…..

Horizon – how we really make decisions

As a Hypnotherapist in Berkshire I found this Horizon program fascinating :

Horizon – How we really make decisions. – Everyday people make thousands of choices and behind all of them is the mind pitting intuition against logic. Psychologist and Nobel Prize-winner Daniel Kahneman explores this conflict that affects every aspect of life from diet to what money is spent on, revealing that the intuitive part of the brain can be surprisingly powerful.

This is not surprising for us Cognitive Hypnotherapist.  One of the fundamental principles of Cognitive Hypnotherapy is that the vast majority (around 90%), of our feelings, values, beliefs, urges, emotions, behavior are driven by our unconscious ( or intuitive ) mind rather than our conscious mind, without us being aware of it.

As a Hypnotherapist in Berkshire I can help with Anxiety, Panic, Stress and with any underlying issues so for Hypnotherapy in Berkshire Contact me.
